My Mom was the daughter of an itinerate preacher. She saw to it that my brother and I attended church every Sunday, beginning at a very young age. However, as I grew older, I drifted away from the teachings of my youth only to make a lot of mistakes.
But God wasn't through with me yet. It was many years later as I waited for my daughter at a bus stop that a little old woman with a kind face asked me, "If you died tonight, do you know where you would spend eternity?"
Naming several reasons why I deserved heaven-from my grandfather having been a preacher, to my growing up in church and being a good, moral person-I answered her with great assurance, "I am going to heaven."
To that the woman lovingly shared some truths of Scripture with me. Then we parted company.
But the woman's words stayed with me. For the next two years, I would think about what the woman said.
Then one night it became a gripping reality to me that none of my reasons guaranteed I'd go to heaven. Only the God of the Bible through His Son, Jesus Christ, could make that guarantee. I immediately jumped from my bed and knelt at my favorite chair. I talked with God, telling Him all my sin and wrongdoing. I then invited Christ to live in my heart. He changed me completely and I began to look at life differently. Now without a doubt, I know I'll someday live in heaven.
Over the next five years, I prayed God would allow me to see that precious woman again. I wanted to thank her for her faithfulness in sharing the gospel.
Late one evening, when I was hospitalized, the nurses brought a frail lady in to share my room. Over the next few days, the two of us enjoyed each other's company. We laughed, talked, shared Scripture and prayed together.
Allergies had kept me from wearing my contact lenses, so I never clearly saw the woman's face. But when I was able to wear them, to my surprise, the woman next to me looked very familiar. After asking a few questions, I learned my hospital roommate was the woman from the bus stop who'd been faithful to share God's love. God was so gracious to answer my long awaited prayer and His timing in bringing us together at that appointed time was so apparent. The following week this dear lady was moved to a nursing facility out of state.
Jesus said in John 14:6 "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Paul writes this in Romans 10:9 "...if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."
By believing this Truth, you, too, can be assured of an eternal home in heaven with Jesus Christ.
